BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Philips Galle (1537-1612), prominent Antwerp engraver and publisher. A key figure in the print trade, known for religious and allegorical subjects after prominent Northern artists.

Biography artist: Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), Dutch Mannerist painter and draftsman. Trained in Haarlem, he traveled to Italy and returned with a style influenced by the antique and Raphael.
