Medium: Etching and engraving, printed in brown on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 18.9 x 13.9 cm (7.44 x 5.47 inch). Image size: 17.9 x 12.8 cm. (7.05 x 5.04 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Some thin paper spots. Ttrimmed to image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From a series of the Twelve Months. Published 1805, possibly by P.H. Jonxis or another Dutch publisher of the period.

Reference: Wurzbach 5.

Biography engraver: Izaak (Isaac) Jansz. de Wit (1744-1809) was a Dutch etcher and engraver, pupil of P. Louw and J.Ph. le Bas. He worked for several notable publishers and was known for detailed landscape and genre scenes.

Biography artist: Jacob Cats (1741-1799) was a Dutch painter, printmaker and draftsman known for genre scenes and detailed seasonal depictions. He is not to be confused with the poet of the same name. His work had moralising and didactic themes and was widely reproduced.
