BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indi?n … zedert het jaar 1524 tot 1526., (transl.: Accurate accounts of memorable sea and land-voyages, to the East and West Indies. … from the year 1524 till 1526), published by Pieter van der Aa, Leiden 1707. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued.
Biography engraver: Jan Lamsvelt (1674-1743) was a Dutch engraver and bookseller active in Amsterdam and Utrecht. Most of his work was as an illustrator, although he had several maps and views to his credit. As is often the case with engravers, little is known of his early years or education.
Biography artist: Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) was a Flemish-born engraver and publisher, known for his vivid illustrations of early voyages to the Americas, based on explorers’ accounts, often dramatized or idealized. .
