BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Plate 35 from Demarteau’s catalogue, published posthumously by his nephew (1788).

Biography engraver: Gilles Demarteau (1722?1776) was a French engraver known for his crayon-manner technique, which imitated red chalk drawings. He published a series of plates after leading artists of the French school.
Biography artist: Carle Van Loo (1705?1765) was a prominent French Rococo painter and director of the Royal Academy. Known for religious and allegorical scenes as well as portraits, he was court painter to Louis XV.
