‘GRAND ENTRY OF THE ALLIED SOVEREIGNS INTO LEIPSIC. 19TH. OCTOBER, 1813.’

– A finely detailed and hand-colored print depicting the grand entrance of the Allied Sovereigns into Leipzig on October 19, 1813, following the decisive Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations. The image captures a triumphal moment with European monarchs and military leaders parading through a city square, surrounded by large crowds and flanked by elaborate historical architecture. This historical scene was published by Robert Bowyer, a renowned British miniature painter and print publisher known for his ambitious projects, including illustrated histories and military prints. Bowyer (1758?1834) contributed significantly to British print culture in the early 19th century, producing works on major historical events such as the Napoleonic Wars.

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, with minimal creasing and soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Bowyer, Robert (1758-1834). An Illustrated Record of Important Events in the Annals of Europe, during the Years 1812, 1813, 1814, & 1815. Comprising a Series of Views of Paris, Moscow, the Kremlin, Dresden, Berlin, the Battle of Leipsic, etc. etc. etc. Together with a History of those Momentous Transactions. London: Printed by T. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street, for R. Bowyer, Marlborough Place, Pall Mall. 1815.

This forms the second part of a work of which the first part is The triumphs of Europe, in the campaigns of the years 1812, 1813, 1814 (paged continuously with the present work) and the third part is The campaign of Waterloo.

Biography engraver: Robert Bowyer (1758-1834) was a British miniature painter and print publisher. He initially gained recognition for his portrait miniatures, painting the likes of Lord Nelson and the Duke of Rutland. In the 1790s, he shifted to print publishing, producing illustrated works such as an edition of the Bible and Hume’s The History of England. His “Historic Gallery” in Pall Mall displayed commissioned works for these publications. Later in life, he became involved in religious causes and missionary work.
