BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Henryk / Heinrich / Henri Daniel Nether (1760-1819) was a pupil of Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine (1745-1830) in the years 1778-1780. He created his (30) etching during his studentship with Norblin and Norblin kept the plates in his posession until his death in 1830. The original signatures of Nether were removed and false signatures ‘Rembrandt f.’ were added before or after 1830. Jean Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine (1745-1830) was a French painter and printmaker who spent much of his career in Poland. He is celebrated for his genre scenes, portraits, and historical depictions, often blending French and Polish influences with techniques inspired by Rembrandt.

Biography artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), the Dutch master, is known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, and for his depictions of intimate, genre scenes and historical subjects. However the Rembrandt inscription was probably false and added at a later date.
