This original antique print shows the inhabitants of Nomuka Island, Tonga, 1643. Abel Tasman gave the island this name in 1643. Also called Anamocka or Rotterdam Island. Illustration from Tasman’s 1642/43 voyage.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published in 1758 by De Hondt, The Hague. Early engravings from Antoine Francois Prevost: Histoire Generale des Voyages. Vol. 16. These are illustrations were previously published by Francois Valentijn in 1726.
Biography engraver: Jakob van der Schley (1715-1779) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver, who mostly did portrait engravings and frontispieces for books throughout his career.
