An elderly clergyman kneels and clings to two bags of coins, surrounded by menacing, grotesquely smiling faces of four figures. The clergyman’s mouth is agape in fear, his eyes closed in anguish as he attempts to hide the money from the figures.
By Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), famous Spanish painter and print maker. Date 1799.
Etching, aquating, drypoint on handlaid paper. Nice early impression.
Condition: Small tear in bottom left margin, not effecting image, backed.
