BACKGROUND INFORMATION
‘Galerie du Palais Royal …’, Paris: J. Couche & J. Bouilliard, [n.d., 1786-1808]. This series of plates depict the collection of the Royal Palace in Paris. Each plate is set in a decorative border and accompanied by a descriptive text (by l’Abbe de Fontenal), describing the artist and painting. The author Jacques Couche (1759-1836), was a French engraver, student of Levasseur.
Biography engraver: Ignaz Sebastian Klauber (1753-1817) originated from Augsburg. He later worked in St. Petersburg.
Biography artist: Caspar Netscher (1639-1684) was a Dutch portrait and genre painter. He was born in Heidelberg or Prague, but fled with his mother and sister to Arnhem during the civil war. He became a pupil of Ter Borch for a few years before embarking on a Grand Tour. He died early, in 1684, but his legacy was thenceforth carried by his two sons, Constantyn and Theodorus.
