A woman (possible a veiled bride) touching a hand to her mouth to signal silence. Etching after one of the later paintings by Matthijs Maris, while living in England and under the influence of Pre-Raphaelite painting.

Signed in pencil by Dake in the lower right (below image). The second signature (M. Maris) seems a later addition.

Made by ‘Carel Lodewijk Dake’ after ‘Matthijs Maris’. Carel Lodewijk Dake (Amsterdam 1857-1918) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. Matthijs Maris (The Hague 1839-1917 London) was a Dutch painter.

Condition: Very good, given age. Faintly discoloured around the image, from previous mat opening or framing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
