Several dead bodies of young boys on the floor. A desperate man embracing a bride, is about to be stung in his back by a soldier. This bride sits on the lap of a fainted or dead lady. In the background we see a city, church in flames. It happened in Antwerp during the 80-year war with the Spanish.

Etching / engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 37,5 x 27,5 cm. (14,8 x 10,8 inch). Image size: 34 x 27 cm. (13,4 x 10,6 inch).

This attractive print was published between 1677-1679. Ref: Hollstein Dutch 9; Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

Made by ‘Jan Luyken’ after own design. Jan Luiken / Luyken (1649-1712) belonged to the best engravers of the period. His son Casper (1672-1708) often assisted with the making of the prints.

Condition: Good, given age. Tear in lower margin and middle fold restored. Fold as published. Brownish margin. Creasing at bottom. Remaind of paper from binding. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
