Plate : ‘Gezicht op ‘s Lands Werf en de Stad Rotterdam …’. (View of the wharf and the city of Rotterdam.) Very rare proof of a copper engraving showing a view of Rotterdam Harbour, with ships and in the background the 18th c. city with the St. Laurens Church and the Zeemagazijn. A large ship and smaller boats can be seen. This scarse print belongs to a series of 4 prints by Bendorp after Groenewegen dedicated to Rotterdam. Date c. 1779 or later.Artists and Engravers: Engraved by K.F. Bendorp after the Rotterdam painter Gerrit Groenewegen. Groenewegen (1754-1826) is known for his drawings and paintings of marine themes and ships. The earliest prints date from 1779.
Condition: Excellent. general age related toning. some light staining from handling. Paper cut just outside the image plate marks. small imperfections in the paper edge.
