Original etching/engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. on paper.
Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 35 x 23.5 cm. The image size is ca. 27.5 x 15.5 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 13.8 x 9.3 inch. The image size is ca. 10.8 x 6.1 inch.
Plate, page 244: “d’Onmenschelijke ombrenging van een Moeder met haar 7. Sonen, door den wreeden Antiochus, alleen om dat sij in hare Gods-dienst wilden getrou blijven” (The inhuman execution of a mother and her 7 sons by cruel Antiochus, because they wanted to remain true to their religion). It shows Antiochus on the right, looking down on a large group of people gathered around a fire on which a person is burning. This original engraving originates from: ‘Spiegel der Sibyllen, van Vierderley Vertooningen [etc.]’, by Johannes Aysma et al, published in 1685 in Amsterdam. (transl.: Mirror of sibyls / prophetess, of fourfold display.)Artists and Engravers: Artist and Engraver: Jan Luyken (1649-1712), belonged to the best engravers of the period.
Condition: Very good given age. Original middle fold, small paper repairs to the rear of the sheet. A small stain in the image, right edge with three small tears. General age related toning and light staining/thumbing. Please study scan carefully.
