Antique print, titled: ‘Vue de la Ville et de l’Ile de Syra.’ – A view of the island Syros, and Ermoupolis. Syros is an island in the Cyclades, Aegean Sea. Some typical sailing ships and rowboats in the foreground. From: “Voyage pittoresque de la Grece”, bound with ”Voyage de Constantinople’, a large and early lithographic atlas. Printed and published in Brussels by Calcographie Royale J. Goubaud, 1822-1829. This is in fact an edition in lithography made after the engraved ed. ‘Voyage pittoresque de la la Grece’ by Choiseul-Gouffier (Paris, 1782-1822) and ‘Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore’ by Melling (Paris, 1809-1819), that were published in Paris. In early lithography by the first Belgian lithographers and much scarser as the earlier engraved ed. Ref: Van der Marck p. 76, 251. Blackmer 1105. Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier (Paris. 1752-1817), called Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier, was a French member of the Academie française and the Choiseul-Gouffier family, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 until the fall of the French monarchy and a scholar of ancient Greece. Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831) was a painter, architect and voyager who is counted among the “Levantine Artists”. He is famous for his vedute of Constantinople, a town where he lived for 18 years.
Condition: Very good, given age. A small nick in the lower margin. Some scattered stains in the margins and one in the left edge of the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
