This detailed description of the meierij (bailiwick) ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the surrounding villages and towns by Hanewinkel, is based on literature study, but also (and more importantly) Hanewinkel’s own perceptions. Stephanus Hanewinckel (also Hanewinkel, 1766-1856) was a Protestant preacher and author of travelogues. Although these books give an interesting insight in everyday life at the time, the author is sometimes quite condescending about the local populace, especially the Roman Catholics and their superstitions. Although his books caused some stubborn prejudices, Hanewinkel went on to write a later book (‘Gedachten over de Meierij) under pseudonym (‘Een Meierijenaar’). He seems to want to redress his earlier wrongs in that third book.

Very good, but with a (profesionally) restored spine and replaced endpapers. Remains of the original spine laid down on the restoration. Some scattered soiling and occasional foxing in the bookblock, which is otherwise fine. A small (closed) tear in the folding map.
