Description: This rare plate originates from: ‘Brabantia Sacra et Profana scenographice illustrata … Castella et Preatoria Nobilium Brabantiae et Coenobia celebriora ad vivum delineata at aes incisa.’, by Jacques le Roy, Amsterdam ed., 1696. The plates were later used in other works by this author as well. Jacques Le Roy did extensive archival research, but he is reknown for his iconography for which he employed talented artists like Jacob Van Werden, Frans Ertinger, Wenzel Hollar, Lucas Vorsterman II and others. The engravers in this work include: Franz Ertinger (1640-1710), Jakob Harrewijn, Wenceslaus Hollar and Lucas Vorsterman. In addition Le Roy incorporated city plans by others. This plate is by Frederick de Wit before the address and it was originally published in the very rare city atlas: ‘Theatrum ichnographicum omnium urbium.’, published in the same period.

Artists and Engravers: Author: Jacques Le Roy, also referred to as Jacob or Jacobus, was a Flemish baron, historian and theologian who lived from 1633-1719. This plate by Johannes Janssonius. Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.
