This very scarce original antique print depicts Matteo Ricci and Xu Guangqi. Matteo Ricci, S.J. (1552 – 1610), was an Italian Jesuit priest and one of the founding figures of the Jesuit China missions. His 1602 map of the world in Chinese characters introduced the findings of European exploration to East Asia. Xu Guangqi (1562 – 1633), also known by his baptismal name Paul, was a Chinese scholar-bureaucrat, Catholic convert, agricultural scientist, astronomer, and mathematician under the Ming dynasty.

Engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 24,5 x 37,5 cm. Image size: 18 x 27,9 cm.

From: ‘Toonneel van China (…)’, by Athanasius Kircherus (Kircher) ed. published in Amsterdam 1667.

Made by an anonymous engraver after Athanasius Kircher.

Condition: Very good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
