This print exists only in a single state, used in the German and French editions of Theodore Duret’s book ‘L’histoire des peintres impressionistes'(Paris, 1906) or ‘Die Impressionisten’ (Berlin, 1909). The book contained three prints by Renoir, of which only the last (not this) was signed in the plate. There is a very faint caption line below the image, the wording of which suggests this is from the German edition of 1909. State: 1st and only state. Ref: Delteil 12.
Made by ‘Auguste Renoir’ after own design. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1848-1919) was a French painter, one of the leading members in the development of the Impressionist style. He studied under Charles Gleyre in Paris, and during his studies met Alfred Sisley, Frédéric Bazille, and Claude Monet, other later Impressionists, with whom he would organise Impressionist exhibitions.
Condition: Very good, given age. A small crease in the top right margin. Two small stains in the margins. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
