Description
This print shows the design from 1663 for the tomb of Hugo de Groot, died August 28, 1645, for the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. The commission for the design was awarded to Rombout Verhulst in 1663; the design was ultimately not implemented. Poem below Hugo de Groot lying down his head on a pile of books.

Medium: Etching / Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 22.7 x 33.8 cm (8.94 x 13.31 inch). Image size: 18 x 26.5 cm. (7.09 x 10.43 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Fold in upper right corner. Remains of paper in corners on reverse. Smudges in margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

This attractive print was published in Cornelis van Alkemade, “Inleidinge tot het ceremonieel, en de plegtigheden der begraavenissen en der wapen-kunde”, Andries Voorstad (I), Delft 1713 and in Caspar Brandt, “Historie van het leven des heeren Huig de Groot”, J. van Braam (Dordrecht) en G. onder de Linden (Amsterdam) 1727.
