View of the City of S. Francis of Campache Ameriq. – This print was prepared to be used as an optical print. San Francisco de Campeche was a prosperous town in Yucatan, Mexico. As such it was under regular attack of pirates and buccaneers. As the city was walled in 1685, this coastal view must date from prior to that. In the foreground ships in battle.

Sheet size: 42,5 x 28,8 cm. (16,7 x 11,3 inch). Image size: 39 x 25,5 cm. (15,4 x 10 inch).

Source unknown, to be determined.

Made by ‘Gabriel Huquier’ after own design. Possibly by Gabriel Huquier (1695-1772) was a French painter, engraver and print merchant from Orleans, active in Paris. Not all is clear about the whereabouts of the Huquier family. Date is derived from date Gabriel moved from the addres on this print on Rue S. Jacques. Publisher: possibly Jacques Gabriel Huquier fils (1725-1805) was a French painter, designer, engraver and merchant, son of Gabriel.

Condition: Good, given age. Prepared as an optical print. Part of margins coloured black. Light soiling and some small stains. A few small tears in paper edges. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
