Subject: Christ being baptised by Saint John the Baptist.
Medium: Engraving on hand laid paper (verge) with Amsterdam coat of arms (with beam below) pointing to a later ed. c.1700.
Artists and engravers: By Antonie Wierix after Maerten de Vos.
Source: From ‘Groote Figuer-bijbel’or ‘Theatrum Biblicum’. The Visscher family published these already antique plates from 1639 on.
Biographies: Anthony (or Anton II) Wierix (1555-1604) was a Flemish engraver from the famous and prolific Wierix family of engravers. Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) was an Antwerp painter and draughtsman of the late sixteenth century. His travels to Italy made him adopt the Mannerist style. His designs were very popular and were followed widely.
