Plate 5: ‘De moeder het hoofd van haar kind in haaren Schoot vangende zingt een Lofzang’ (The mother sings a hymn while she catches her child’s head in her lap). It shows: a man being decapitated, his mother kneeling in front of him, ready to catch the falling head. This original engraving originates from ‘Tafereelen der eerste Christenen, bestaande in 92 konstprenten’ (Scenes of the first Christians, in 92 prints). This book was published in 1740 in Amsterdam by Gerrity de Groot and Jacobus Rijkhof. The prints by Luyken are accompanied by texts by P. Langendyk and C. Condition: Very good, given age. A small spot of wear in the bottom of the fold. Original middle fold. Some general age-related toning and thumbing, please study scan carefully.
