This print shows Aeneus in the night to whom appears the image of the gods along with the proclamation of Apollo’s decree (middle left). In the background we see the journey to Krete along the islands Donusa, Naxos, Olearus and Paros. In Krete the Trojans build a new town called Pergamum. In the middle of the woodcut we see the effects of contageous deseases, death people and animals lying around. The story is from Virgil (70-19 BC). He is regarded as one of greatest Poets of ancient Rome. Arguably, his most known work is the “Aeneid”-the epic tale of Aenaes’ search for a new homeland. Despite being an unfinished work, “Aeneid” is among one of the most important poems in the history of Western Literature and is widely considered to be the poet’s finest work. In the renaisssance the work has been edited by Sebastian Brandt.
