Plate : ‘XVII Provinciae.’ This plate shows the coats of arms of the 17 Dutch provinces. On top 2 heraldic lions holding the Dutch coat of arms.

Medium: engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand-laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 31 x 50 cm (12.2 x 19.69 inch). Image size: 25.5 x 41 cm. (10.04 x 16.14 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Horizontal fold. Margins slightly browned and light scattered foxing. Small hole just below image. A few very small tears in the edges. Some light creases in the margins. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This print originates from De Wit’s Town Atlas published in The Netherlands, ca 1698.
Biography engraver: Frederik/Frederick de Wit (Amsterdam 1630-1706), was a famous engraver and publisher in Amsterdam. He acquired many of the printing plates of Blaeu and Janssonius when it came to auction. His map were very popular because of the quality of the engravings and the beautiful colouring. After his death his work was re-issued by Pieter Mortier and Covens & Mortier.
