BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published in the famous travelbook of Paul Lucas, which was published by Johann Baptist Homann in 1716.
Biography engraver: Johann Baptist Homann (1664 ? 1724) was a Bavarian geographer and cartographer. Although preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he soon turned to engraving and cartography and in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece ‘Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt’, (Grand Atlas of all the World). After Homann died in Nuremberg he was succeeded by the Homann heirs company and the business continued until 1848.
