‘EMUNDUS DINTERUS, BRABANTIAE HISTORIOGRAPHUS …’

– Portrait of Emond Ambrosii de Dynter / Emond van Dinter (c.1370-1449) a Dutch historian and secretary to several dukes of Brabant and Burgundy. He originated from Dinther. He was the author of a chronicle on the history of Brabant until 1442: ‘Chronica nobilissimorum ducum Lotharingiae et Brabantiae ac Regnum Francorum.’

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 17 x 23.5 cm (6.69 x 9.25 inch). Image size: 11.3 x 16.5 cm. (4.45 x 6.5 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From a unidentified series of portraits, published between 1567 and 1608 in several editions and varying content, mostly covering humanists. Later in the 17th.c. individual plates were published as well. The largest part of the plates were published as part of ‘Bibliotheca Belgica’ by J.F. Foppens in 1739. Based in the paper these plate can surely be dated 17th.c. or earlier.

State: 2nd state (2).

Reference: New Hollstein 613.

Biography engraver: Philips Galle (1537-1612) was a prominent Netherlandish engraver and publisher based in Haarlem and later Antwerp. He produced reproductive engravings after both Italian and Northern artists and ran a prolific publishing house.
