‘EZECHIELS VISION (..).’

– Original antique print illustrating a biblical scene from Ezekiel 1; It captures the prophet Ezekiel witnessing a divine manifestation by the river Chebar. In the center, you see winged beings, often described as having four faces (human, lion, ox, and eagle). Surrounding the creatures are intersecting “wheels within wheels,” covered in eyes, which represent the omnipresence and movement of God’s chariot. At the top, amidst radiant light and clouds, sits a figure on a throne, representing the glory of the Lord.

Medium: Engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.

Biography engraver: Engraver unknown/to be determined.

Biography artist: Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French painter and engraver. He received his art education from his father, Etienne (1632-1721), from Le Brun and Jouvenet at the Royal Academy. His talents developed rapidly: at the age of sixteen he gained honors at the Academy of Paris. His prints in the ‘French’ taste were very popular. His way of working was also very influential for the book illustration in the Netherlands. Pieter de Hondt, Dutch publisher and bookseller (1696–1764).
