BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From Anthony van Dyck’s Iconographia portrait series, published in Antwerp.
Biography engraver: Paulus Pontius (1603–1658) was a Flemish engraver and publisher from Antwerp. He became one of the foremost reproductive engravers of the Baroque period and collaborated extensively with Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. His refined burin technique made him a leading interpreter of Flemish portrait painting in print.
Biography artist: Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) was a Flemish Baroque painter and printmaker renowned for his elegant portraits of European aristocracy and artists. His Iconographia portrait series became one of the most influential engraved portrait publications of the seventeenth century.
