Description
This print shows a view on a portrait of Saint Prisca of Rome, with the lions that did not attack her in the arena and the scene of her beheading in the background. Part of a series of 24 depictions of female martyrs (martyrologium). The plate have edges with flowers and animals. This print is a mirror image of the original. With a latin text beneath. In English: “It is not the lions of Nemea who have tamed your limbs, but the sword of your soldier, O Claudius,”

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (vergé) paper.
Sheet size: 18 x 26.2 cm (7.09 x 10.31 inch). Image size: 14.5 x 18.7 cm. (5.71 x 7.36 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Brownish on reverse. Remains of paper tape on reverse. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
