Description
This print shows a view on a portrait of Saint Francis of Paola in a meditative pose, surrounded by religious symbols such as a skull, rosary and a crucifix. An engraving of Saint Francis, identifiable by his habit, skull and crucifix. The scenes in the background show a landscape with a church building and a praying figure. The text at the bottom is a Latin quote from Galatians 2:19-20, which emphasizes the spiritual condition of the saint: “I have been crucified with Christ: yet I live, but no longer myself, but Christ lives in me”.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published by Peter Firens (1604-1671) French publisher/printer; printmaker. Ca 1650.
Biography engraver: Hieronymus Wierix (1553-1619), one of the three brothers, all engravers. Active in Antwerp.
Biography artist: Maarten de Vos (1532-1603), Antwerp-born painter and designer, prolific draftsman for religious series, whose work influenced a generation of Northern printmakers.
