Description
This print shows a view on a portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi (ca. 1181–1226), the founder of the Franciscan order. He is depicted embracing and kissing a crucifix. The saint shows the stigmata (crucifixion wounds) on his hands, which according to tradition he received during a vision. In front of him lies an open Bible on a table or rock. In the background is a landscape with a church building. Translation of latin text: “For to me the life is Christ, and the dying is gain” (Philippians 1:21).

Condition: good, given age. Brownish edges. Remains of paper tape on reverse. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published by Peter Firens (1604-1671) French publisher/printer; printmaker. Ca 1650.
Biography engraver: Hieronymus Wierix (1553-1619), one of the three brothers, all engravers. Active in Antwerp.
Biography artist: Maarten de Vos (1532-1603), Antwerp-born painter and designer, prolific draftsman for religious series, whose work influenced a generation of Northern printmakers.
