BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From the series Stage Designs of the New Amsterdam Schouwburg, 1787-1794; scene from the tragedy Robbert de Vries by Willem Haverkorn Willemszoon, Amsterdam 1777.
State: A proof ed. of just the stage, without the surrounding theatre and audience.

Biography engraver: Cornelis Brouwer (1733-1803) was an engraver active in the Northern Netherlands in the late 18th century; active in Amsterdam from 1765. Worked for Ploos van Amstel (q.v.) since 1775.
Biography artist: Pieter Antonsz Barbiers (1717-1780) was a Dutch artist. He was born and died in Amsterdam. He painted scenery for the theaters in Amsterdam, Leiden, and other cities. Another picture representing the conflagration of the former in the year 1772 has been engraved by C. Bagerts. His sons Bartholomeus Barbiers and Pieter Pietersz Barbiers were also painters.
