BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From the series Stage Designs of the New Amsterdam Schouwburg, 1787-1794; scene from the play The Father of the Family by Denis Diderot (Dutch translation by H. van Elvervelt, Amsterdam 1773).
State: A proof ed. of just the stage, without the surrounding theatre and audience.

Biography engraver: Cornelis Brouwer (1733-1803) was an engraver active in the Northern Netherlands in the late 18th century; active in Amsterdam from 1765. Worked for Ploos van Amstel (q.v.) since 1775.
Biography artist: Jan Bulthuis (1750-1801) was a Dutch draftsman and painter. Johannes van Dreght (1737-1807) was a Dutch decorative painter; known for his work on fireplaces, carriages, yachts, sleds and fans.
