– Two folio pages from the German edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle (Schedel’sche Weltchronik), richly illustrated with hand-colored woodcuts of historical figures including popes, scholars, and royalty. The reverse pages include portraits of Pope Eugenius IV, Pope Felix V, Poggio Bracciolini, Gasparinus Bergomensis, Antonius de Butrio, Franciscus Zabarella, Barbara of Celje, and others.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From ‘Liber Chronicarum’ (Nuremberg Chronicle) = Schedelsche Weltchronik, by Hartmann Schedel, printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, 1493.

Biography engraver: Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (c.1450-1494) were German artists and printmakers. Wolgemut, Albrecht D?rer’s teacher, collaborated with Pleydenwurff in producing woodcut illustrations for the Nuremberg Chronicle.

Biography artist: Author: Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was a German historian, physician, humanist, and one of the first cartographers to use the printing press.
