– Bust-length portrait of Admiral Jan Willem de Winter in richly embroidered naval uniform, turned slightly to his left. Jan Willem de Winter (1761-1812) was a Dutch military officer and diplomat who served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is best known for commanding the Batavian Navy fleet which was defeated by the Royal Navy at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797.

Medium: Mezzotint engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: lettering.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) was an English-born mezzotint engraver and portraitist who settled in the Netherlands. Known for his elegant mezzotints after both Dutch and British masters, he was highly influential in Amsterdam’s printmaking scene.

Biography artist: Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834) was a Dutch publisher and bookseller active in Amsterdam, known for topographical works and portraits of notable Dutch figures.
