Medium: Line engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 18 x 24.3 cm (7.09 x 9.57 inch). Image size: 15.8 x 21 cm. (6.22 x 8.27 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Light foxing, soiling and creasing. Some dampstaining in bottom left margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

‘Histoire des Provinces-Unies des Pays Bas…’, or ‘Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden…’ by Jean Le Clerc, 1723-1728 or 1730. .

Biography engraver: Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a renowned French engraver who settled in Amsterdam and became known for his refined and detailed portrait engravings. He contributed to many significant illustrated works, including religious and historical compendia.

Biography artist: Robert Walker (1599-1658) was an English portrait painter best known for his depictions of Oliver Cromwell and other figures of the Parliamentarian regime during the English Civil War. His portrait of Cromwell served as the basis for many later engravings.
