– Plate 232: Depiction of Moses, seated and holding the Tablets of the Law, with rays (horns) on his head, based on the famous marble sculpture by Michelangelo (not ‘Michael Bonerolus’ ? likely a corrupted Latinized reference). This figure is one of Michelangelo’s most iconic works, housed in San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: not on all sheets.

Image size: 8.3 x 13.2 cm. (3.27 x 5.2 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing and soiling. Paper edges with some light staining. And irriegular per scan. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: “Recueil des Figures, Groupes, Thermes, Fontaines, Vases, Statues, et Autres Ornemens de Versailles” by Simon Thomassin. The book was published between 1694 and 1724 by Simon Thomassin in Paris (1694), Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam (1695) and Rutgert Alberts in The Hague (1724).

Biography engraver: Simon Thomassin (1655-1733) was a French royal engraver known for documenting the sculpture and decoration of Versailles. His series are valued for their precision and elegance.

Biography artist: Based on a statue by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), one of the greatest Italian Renaissance artists, known for his sculpture, painting, and architecture. His Moses sculpture was created between 1513 and 1515 for the tomb of Pope Julius II.
