An engraving illustrating Hernan Cortes’ arrival in Tlaxcala, Mexico following his retreat from the Battle of Otumba. The Spanish and their Tlaxcalan allies were pursued by the Aztecs but managed to reorganize in Tlaxcala before launching a successful campaign that ultimately led to the fall of Tenochtitlan. The image shows Cort?s receiving a ceremonial welcome from Tlaxcalan leaders, while the Spanish forces regroup.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, ‘VIER VERSCHEYDE REYS-TOGTEN te Water ende te Land gedaan na de Vaste Kust van CHIRIBICHI, CUBAGUA, CHICORA en NIEUW-SPAANJE. In ‘t Jaar 1520.’ Published by Pieter van der Aa, in Leiden in 1706. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher, engraver, and cartographer known for producing travel books and historical illustrations. His works often contained elaborate engravings depicting key moments in exploration and conquest.

Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670-1731) was a Dutch engraver, draughtsman, and author, mainly active in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Gerard de Lairesse and created detailed historical engravings.
