BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The engraving is based on an earlier work from Johann Ludwig Gottfried’s Newe Welt und Americanische Historien (1655), which in turn was influenced by Grands Voyages by Theodor de Bry. Published in Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste Zee en Land-Reysen na Oost en West-Indien, Leiden, c.1707. Leiden, 1707, by Pieter van der Aa. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued.

Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670-1731) was a Dutch engraver, draughtsman, and author, mainly active in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Gerard de Lairesse and created detailed historical engravings.

Biography artist: Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) was a Flemish engraver and publisher, famous for his Grands Voyages, which visually documented European explorations in the Americas based on reports from explorers such as Jacques Le Moyne and John White. Publisher: Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher and bookseller based in Leiden. He specialized in geography and travel books, producing numerous atlases and city plans. He often republished earlier works, combining original material with reprints from other cartographers.
