BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: ‘Theatrum Europaeum.’, by Matthaus Merian. Theatrum Europaeum was a journal on the history of the German-speaking lands by Matthaus Merian, published between 1633 and 1738 in 21 quarto volumes.

Biography engraver: Matthaus Merian der Altere (1593-1650) was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house.
