BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: ‘Commentariorum rerum Germanicorum libri tres (…) by Petrus Bertius, published by Johannes Janssonius, 1616. After a plate by Pieter van der Keere from: ‘Description de touts les Pays-Bas …’, by L. Guicciardini, published in 1613.

Biography engraver: Etrus Bertius (also Peter Bertius. (Dutch) Pieter de Bert) (1565 ? 1629), a Flemish theologian, historian, geographer and cartographer. Bertius published much in mathematics, and historical and theological works, but he is now best known as cartographer with his edition of the Geographia of Ptolemy (based on Mercator’s edition from 1578), and for his atlas.
