‘PUGNA AD STEEMBERGAM ANNO 1583.’

– Original antique print showing the Battle of Steenbergen, also known as the Capture of Steenbergen of 1583, it took place on 17 June 1583 at Steenbergen, Duchy of Brabant, Spanish Netherlands (present-day North Brabant, the Netherlands). This was an important victory for the Spanish Army of Flanders led by Don Alexander Farnese, Prince of Parma (Spanish: Alejandro Farnesio), Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands, over the French, English, and Dutch forces led by the French Marshal Armand de Gontaut, Baron de Biron, and the English commander Sir John Norreys, during the Eighty Years’ War.

This rare antique print originates from: ‘Romani e Societate Iesv De bello Belgico.’, published by Franciscus Corbeletti in Rome 1640.

Reference: Reference: Hollstein Dutch 16, FMH 807-a.

Biography engraver: Giacomo Cortese (1621-1676), Italian painter and draughtsman.

Biography artist: Famiano Strada (1572 ? 6 September 1649) was an Italian Jesuit and historian of wars in the low countries (Belgium and Netherlands) during the early part of the Eighty Years’ War, starting with the abdication of Charles V in 1556 to the capture of Rheinsberg in 30 January 1590.
