‘”HEMEL GLOBE.” / “C?LI ENARRANT GLORIAM DEI”‘

– A finely detailed celestial map depicting the constellations of the northern and southern hemispheres, showing the constellations in both hemispheres, with mythological figures superimposed over the star positions. The outer areas are decorated with clouds, cherubs, and allegorical imagery. The title is placed at the top within an ornate cartouche. Engraved by Adriaan de Winter. The Latin inscription at the bottom reads “C?li enarrant gloriam Dei”, meaning “The heavens declare the glory of God”.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Adriaan de Winter (1653-1707) was a Dutch copper engraver, cartographer, and printseller, active in Amsterdam. He specialized in scientific illustrations, maps, and celestial charts, contributing to several atlases of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Biography artist: Henri du Sauzet (1686/87-1754) was a French-born bookseller and publisher based in Amsterdam. He was known for producing geographical and scientific works, including the Atlas de Poche, which contained maps and celestial charts intended for travelers and scholars.
