BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in 1802 by E. Maaskamp in Amsterdam as a reproduction of Rembrandt’s original work, now held in the Royal British Collection.

Biography engraver: Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) was a British-born mezzotint engraver who worked in the Netherlands. Known for his fine portrait prints, he was influential in Dutch printmaking of the early 19th century.

Biography artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was one of the most important artists of the Dutch Golden Age, known for his masterful use of light, shadow, and realism in portraiture and historical subjects.
