– Map titled: “‘Afbeeldinghe vande Molucques, seer correct afgeteyckent, met allen zijn Eylanden ende Sterckten, met een afbeeldinghe vande Straet van Botton.” A highly detailed 17th-century map of the East Indies, covering Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and surrounding regions. Features navigation routes, islands, and coastal details, featuring an inset of the so-called Botton Strait near Cambodia. Used as an illustration in Joris van Spilbergen’s travel accounts and later in VOC publications.

Description

Medium: Engraving with original hand-coloring on hand-laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 43.4 x 32.4 cm (17.09 x 12.76 inch). Image size: 42.3 x 30.8 cm. (16.65 x 12.13 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Original folding as issued. Small tears at the folds and paper edges. Paper edges reinforced with acid free tape on rear. Overall browning. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Used as illustration first in: J. van Spilbergen, Oost ende West-Indische spiegel der 2 leste navigatien, ghedaen inden jaeren 1614, 15, 16, 17, ende 18. daer in vertoont woort, in wat gestalt Ioris van Speilbergen door de Magellanes de werelt rontom geseylt heeft …; met de Australische navigati?n, van Iacob le Maire, … met veel wonders … in 26 coperen platen afghebeelt, N. Geelkerck, Leiden 1619.

Later reused in: I. Commelin, Begin ende voortgangh, van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie, J. Janssonius, Amsterdam 1646. Numbered: No. 19.

Biography artist: Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620) was aDutch admiral and circumnavigator. One of the first Dutch voyagers to the East, undertaking a voyage to Ceylon and Bantam 1601-1604 and a circumnavigation journey 1614-1617.
