‘A MAP EXHIBITING THE RETREAT OF THE FRENCH ARMY FROM MOSCOW TO PARIS.’

– A detailed map illustrating the retreat of the French Army from Moscow to Paris following Napoleon’s disastrous Russian campaign of 1812. The map is divided into three sections, covering vast areas of Europe, including Russia, Poland, Germany, and France. Battlesites are indicated but the exact path of retreat is not explicitly delineated. Engraved by W. Milton after a design by I. Hebert, and published by Robert Bowyer in London on February 20, 1815. Bowyer (1758-1834) was a British miniature painter and print publisher, known for his ambitious illustrated editions, including historical prints related to the Napoleonic Wars. This print was donated to the British Museum in 1918 by Edward Ernest Leggatt.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Bowyer, Robert (1758-1834). An Illustrated Record of Important Events in the Annals of Europe, during the Years 1812, 1813, 1814, & 1815. Comprising a Series of Views of Paris, Moscow, the Kremlin, Dresden, Berlin, the Battle of Leipsic, etc. etc. etc. Together with a History of those Momentous Transactions. London: Printed by T. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street, for R. Bowyer, Marlborough Place, Pall Mall. 1815.

This forms the second part of a work of which the first part is The triumphs of Europe, in the campaigns of the years 1812, 1813, 1814 (paged continuously with the present work) and the third part is The campaign of Waterloo.

Biography engraver: W. Milton (fl. 1815-) was a British engraver known for detailed cartographic and historical prints, frequently collaborating with major publishers of the early 19th century.

Biography artist: I. Hebert (fl. 1810-1820) was a British cartographer and lithographer known for military and historical maps, contributing to illustrated works on Napoleonic history.
