This print is part of a series of eight engravings by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. These works are studies of different military figures and were designed and engraved with the intent to serve as a guide for the young nobility, presumably for the study of military postures or possibly as inspiration for artists. Each print in the series captures various poses of French guards?kneeling, sitting, lying in different positions?which could be studies of human anatomy in action or repose, a common practice for artists perfecting their craft.
