Description
Selfportrait of Christiaan le Roy (1884-1969). The artist looks at you with a sharp gaze through round glasses in a black frame. He appears to be examining himself or his own portrait critically with his chin resting on his hands and deep wrinkles in his forehead. He still holds the lithography marker in his right hand. Should I elaborate on my costume further or should I just leave it as is? Or is he having second thoughts about that two-day-old brush moustache? This mustache was especially popular among soldiers at the beginning of the 20th century. And Le Roy had been a soldier, but never wholeheartedly. He would have preferred to study biology at Leiden University. Fortunately, as a soldier he had a lot of free time and was able to further his skills in painting and drawing, a hobby he had taken up at an early age. During the First World War he was stationed in Leiden. He remained in Leiden until 1925 and around 1920 he drew the rural environment of Leiden and portraits of the men and women in the urban workplace. The drawings this lithograph are based on are now in the collection of Museum De Lakenhal. He also came into contact with Floris Verster. He learned from him that you had to work alternately, sometimes loosely and sometimes very precisely. This came in handy when, on the advice of an ophthalmologist, he had to draw nature in great detail. He learned stone graphics in the early 1920s at the Lithographic Institute in The Hague. In this technique, and based on his nature studies, he made his first twelve-page botanical calendars. He would continue to make them for 25 years, later also with birds, reptiles and other animals. He also translated his own development as an artist into the drawing lessons he gave at the teacher training college and elaborated on it in: ”our drawing hour’, a complete course for drawing at primary school’.
