Description
Original master print, titled: ‘La Nuit’. It shows at the edge of a village a man is pulling a boat from the water, while another man, holding a bucket, watches. A small sailing boat is on the water to the left. The scene is lit by the moon, partly hidden behind a large tree on the far left.
Made by Pierre-Charles Canot after Jean-Baptiste Pillement.
Medium: engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 50 x 38.5 cm (19.69 x 15.16 inch). Image size: 43 x 33.5 cm. (16.93 x 13.19 inch).
Condition: very good, given age. Top and bottom margins cropped tight. A small cluster of pinpricks in the lower right corner (minimally affecting the image). A wormhole in the lower left margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Original antique master print. This print is one from a series of 4: Le Soleil Levant/Le Midi/Le Soleil Couchant/La Nuit (published 1759-1760). Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Canot after a painting by Pillement. This print was published by Le Pere et Avaulez, in c.1760.
Biography engraver: Pierre-Charles Canot (c.1710-1777) was a French engraver, although he moved to England in 1740, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Biography artist: Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808) was a French painter and designer. He was well known for his exquisite landscapes.
