Biography engraver: Georg Friedrich Schmidt (Schonerlinde 1712 – Berlin 1775) was a German engraver and designer. He studied art under Busch and later Larmessin in Paris. In 1757 he was summoned to Saint Petersburg to engrave the portrait of Empress Elizabeth. His etching and engraving style (in the manner of Rembrandt) gained him great recognition and is ranked among the best work in Germany at the time. He created ca. 200 etchings and engravings in his lifetime.
